October 16, 2019 Kat + Mike
A beautiful stone venue, warm autumn colours, and a customized gown—these are a few of our favourite things. So is this sweet couple's love story! Take a peek at Kathryn + hubby Mike's big day and get inspired.
A few words from the bride:
Mike and I met in high school, and though we were only friends, there was something about him that drew me in. We were great friends throughout high school, and became besties at Queen's University—there to listen, give advice, and support through hard times, even though we were both in several relationships throughout those years. In the back of my mind, there was always a subconscious gut feeling that we might be something more, but I ignored it in favour of preserving my most precious friendship.
The night before Mike was due to move away for summer work, we spent the evening driving around so he could say his goodbyes to friends. We saved ours for last. Before I could say a word, he kissed me, and admitted to more than friendly feelings for the past 5 years—and the rest, as they say, is history.
His proposal didn't quite go as planned, but it makes for a good story! We'd tried to go out fishing while on a weekend getaway at his family's cabin, but rough waves made us return to shore. Just as we got back onto the dock, I turned around to find the canoe being carried away by the current. But Mike had the ring in his pocket, so he made me jump into the lake and drag the boat back! The next few minutes were a blur of being wrapped in a towel to warm up and him reading a sweet letter he'd written me...then he suddenly stood me up, got down on his knee, and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him!
We tied the knot at the the Centre for Performing Arts on the Queen's campus, which was fitting as it's where our friendship really flourished. Since a big wedding with immaculate details had never really been important to me, I just wanted things to be simple but classy, with a whimsical feel. Our best friend married us, which kicked off the whole night with a very personal, intimate feeling.
The whole day was honestly perfect, but one part in particular was so special for me. Mike and I had written a section of speech just for each other (additional vows, basically!) that we originally intended to read during speeches. Due to a dying computer we ended up away from the crowds to find a plug and wound up reading these to each other in private. It added a beautifully emotional touch to the night, while giving us a few moments alone amidst the busyness of it all.
